APPLE TURNOVERS
- Start with some yummy apples- about 6 cups, peeled and sliced.
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 3/4 cup pecans(optional)
- 3 tablespoons of butter
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- Combine all ingredients in a heavy pot-mine is an iron skillet(deep) - and cook on medium about 10-15 minutes until apples are tender;set aside to cool
- Next you prepare a pastry crust
- 1 1/4 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 3-4 tablespoons cold water
- Mix the shortening into the flour & salt with a pastry blender or fork until crumbly; add the cold water and stir until the dough clings together to form a ball.
- Roll out circles of dough and put cooled filling in center
- Fold circle over filling and crimp edges . For a pretty crust mix an egg white & teaspoon of water together and paint over each turnover before baking
- Bake on greased cookie sheet at 425 until crust is nicely browned ; sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar and enjoy with a cold glass of milk!!!!
